Today, 12.31.14 and I stepped on the scale for the last time in 2014 expecting to be lighter than I was on 12.31.13 RESULTS = Down 6#. Some will say “so what” six pounds, but to a 55 year old young man who has always struggled with being FAT & OBESE, that’s a huge number.

Back on 12.21.09 I weight 310# and that’s the day that changed my life forever. I was tested for sleep apnea with the expectation of being hooked up to and sleeping with a new bed partner every night “The C-Pap Machine.” When they told me I was free and clear of sleep apnea I was ready to lose weight.

With no pills, no potions and no surgeries… Fast forward to 11/2011, I lost 135#. Good ‘ole exercise and following the Joy Bauer Book YOUR INNER SKINNY and I was inducted into her JoyFitClub on 11.29.10

My real point is losing all of that weight was awesome, but I did gain back and weight has always been like a roller coaster for me. In the winter of 2014, I gained 40# in 3 months and lost 35# of that during The Greatest Weight Loss Challenge I, where 12 friends said hey let’s lose weight. We all paid $20 each to do it and winner take all after 12 weeks. Well, I won that challenge. I’m #42.

And in Challenge II, I was #6… It was hard to win this one as I lost 23# in Challenge I.

Losing weight will always be a challenge for me, BECAUSE I LIKE TO EAT.

Weighing 175# in 2011 was actually TOO SKINNY!!! People were asking me are you sick. I didn’t need to weight 175# to be healthy. I need to be right at 200# to be healthy, happy and good looking. LOL

My 2015 goal is to get back to my ideal weight 200#. So today is my last indulgence, as 2015 starts 1.1.15.

Who’s with me?

4 years ago today I got a phone call from the offices of Joy Bauer in New York City… “we want you to come to the Big Apple and be on the NBC Today Show LIVE on TV on 11/29/10.” Me: Yea, right, I’m just local guy from Crown Point, IN that decided to lose over 100# to become healthy. Now a member of the Official members of the “Joy Fit Club”. Maintaining that weight loss is even harder. It will always be a struggle for me. Time to get back to that goal weight… NOW!

Being overweight has always been a lifetime struggle for me. 1/1/2010 was my light bulb day. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. It was always a laughing joke in my family that I could sleep anywhere, anytime. It didn’t matter if I was in the comfort of my own home or sitting on a bench at Walt Disney World. If I sat down, I went to sleep. In December 2009 I was tested for sleep apnea with the thought in my mind that I was going to be hooked up to C-PAP machine the rest of my life. When I was told I did not have sleep apnea, I said “Hey, I’m getting a 2nd chance at life.”

I stepped on that dreaded scale at home and it said 310#… My initial thought was: “Good Lord, what am I doing?” It was that day that I decided to do something about it. I started walking with my 2nd daughters dog “Molly.” You all don’t know Molly, but it was her pulling me down the street that got me to where I am today.

Molly is now a 60# dog that doesn’t take walking leisurely, she wants to run. So, I figured I better either start running or she’s gonna pull my arms off.

It was the summer of August 2010, when my wife said “try this book, maybe it will help you,” The Joy Bauer book “Your Inner Skinny.” In the 1st week, I lost 14#. I said where the hell has this book been and set a goal that day to lose 100# by Thanksgiving 2010.

This saga story will continue…

I have done many stupid things in my life. One of the worst was allowing myself to buy a XXXXL shirt back in 2009 and to get my poundage up to 310#. It was that shocking size of a shirt that made me decide to lose weight one more time in my life. I lost 135# in 2010. The long winter of 2014 we all faced was bad in many ways. For me, it lead to gaining 40#, and I wasn’t having a baby. Just one more stupid thing I allowed myself (ME) to do. On tax day 2014 (4/15), I decided it was time to lose that 40# forever. Since that tax day I’ve lost 35# (7/1/14 weigh-in) and will not stop until that 40# is gone. My biggest help this time around has been T25 and Shakeology daily. I’ve promised myself that the only roller coasters I’m going on are the ones that go fast and upside down and eventually stop. Happy 4 1/2 years later to be wearing size LARGE shirts. One thing that I didn’t mention is I’ve done all of this in my 50’s. In July 2014, I’m turning 55. Never to old or to young to get Fit For Life. Want some info on what I’m doing, just ask me.Some people never have or never will struggle with being overweight, but for those that have or still do, I hope this helps you and ME since I struggle with this every day of my life.

But now that has changed and I’m feel like Michael Jordan “I’M BACK”. On 4.21.14 I weighed in for the Greatest Loser Challenge and in addition to that I started T25 fitness challenge to stay Fit For Life.

On 6.16.14 I weighed in and had lost 8.5% of my body and was the WINNER of The Greatest Loser Challenge. I lost 19# in the challenge and the highest % of body amongst 11 contestants.

You too can join this T25 challenge with me. It’s an exercise program that you do in your house for 25-minutes a day. No equipment is needed or required. http://teambeachbody.com/shop/-/shopping/BCPT25205?referringRepId=386623

My motto: If YOU are not moving, YOU are not losing… If YOU say YOU can’t, YOU won’t… I know believe ME! My point is if YOU say YOU can’t, YOU won’t, and that has to do with everything in life. Do some kind of exercise everyday and keep moving. If YOU are moving, YOU are losing something. At the end of the day, YOU will feel better that YOU accomplished something today, that YOU didn’t do yesterday. The thing about it is, YOU have to do it everyday.

Never say “NO” to anything YOU want to accomplish in life. Just go for it!

The hardest thing to do is to talk about it. In 2010, I lost 135# in 10 months and in 2013 (winter) I gained 22 of those pounds back on. Why? Because I got stupid and just got lazy with my eating habits.

But now that has changed and I’m feel like Michael Jordan “I’M BACK”. On 4.21.14 I weighed in for the Greatest Loser Challenge and in addition to that I started T25 fitness challenge to stay Fit For Life.

I have lost lots of that weight back off my body. I can’t really say what # I am in the contest because we all have a secret #, but I can say that I am extremely happy with what I have dropped.

How to start:
1. Mentally change your mind that you want to lose weight and get in shape.
2. Start walking today. One time around the block, turns into more and more.
3. Start eating less when it comes to consumption.
4. Join a group that motivates you to change your eating plan.
5. Make a food lifestyle change. Never D.I.E.t. Nobody is ready for the 1st 3 letters in D.I.E.t.
5. Ask someone else to be a mentor for each other.
6. Join a walking group or running group.
7. Plan your exercise.
8. If you change your mind and do the above, it’s amazing the results you will begin to see.

My motto: If YOU are not moving, YOU are not losing… If YOU say YOU can’t, YOU won’t… I know believe ME! My point is if YOU say YOU can’t, YOU won’t, and that has to do with everything in life. Yesterday, 4.13.14 I climbed 812 stairs, 52 floors of the John Hancock Observatory Building in downtown Chicago. It was my 4th time doing the Hustle Up the Hancock. My plan every year is to take the challenge 2-steps at a time all the way to the top. My 2nd and 3rd years I bombed out around the 85th floor and this year I was more than ever determined to complete this task. I trained this year doing more steps than ever in the past years, so I knew I was ready. Being heavier than last didn’t help. In the end, I was able to complete without ever stopping. 812 stairs… 2-steps at a time… 1:17 seconds slower than in 2013. That’s the way it goes. One challenge over another. I’m happy that I was able to complete my 2-steps at a time, but not happy that I was heavier than 2013. I’m such a dumb ass sometimes.

This morning I found out how much heavier. Here’s what I heard this morning 4.14.14. My Dr. tells jokes during my annual exam and in the end gives me a clean bill of health. She said, “your resting heart beat is 38 (what are you runner?) and great BP. You don’t need to take pills. The good news is “you’re not obese”, just overweight and that’s no joke. 12#’s heavier than last year, so what the hell are you doing? A #1 gain every month and you’ll be in a coffin soon.” My Dr. tells it like it. She’s woken the sleeping lion. Time for 6-meals a day and less consumption. Here we go! What a dumb ass I am.

So, the plan is to get out the book… “Your Inner Skinny”. The program that made me lose 135# in 2010 in 10 months. It worked then, it will work again. The nice thing is it’s a plan and not one of those diets where you have to eat 1,500-2,000 calories to lose weight. Who’s got the time to write everything down and keep track of it. It a lifestyle change with food.

This yo-yo shit has to stop. Told my Dr. before I left that next year when I see her, I’ll be down 20#. She said I’m holding you to that saying. I’m checking back you in 6 months.

Here’s to starting RIGHT NOW!

On the morning of January 11, 2014 and I mean the morning of… alarm clock went of at 3am (EST) in the middle of Orlando, Florida in the Animal Kingdom Lodge at Disney World. My first thought was “why am I doing this again?” My second thought was because I CAN and I WILL!

As I roamed around the room getting while 9 of my family members slept, there was a strange feeling going on in my body. I wasn’t looking forward to the long bus ride to Epcot, the long walk to the starting corrals and the rain that was predicted. The weather app on my phone said a 50% chance of rain. Crap, as I took out my garbage bag to wear over my clothes in the corrals before I started.

Surprisingly, the bus was waiting when I walked out at 3:45 am (EST) and the ride was smooth and quick as I caught a nap on the way and dreamed about no rain in 13.1 miles. It was crowded as usual, but smooth walking and the only ones talking were the run volunteers. Getting to my corral seemed quick and only noticed a few men and women in the bushes along the way. We had already out paced the port-a-potties.

This 13.1 run was for the gold bling, the experience and the characters. This makes my 5th 1/2 marathon since 2010.

YOU have to believe that YOU too can run a 1/2 marathon. YOU must walk before YOU can run.

If “I can do it, anybody can do it”.

Never say “NO” to anything YOU want to accomplish in life. Just go for it!

I will never be a fast runner, but I’m always willing to try and get better. That’s feels weird to even say that statement. I did not start running until I was 50 years old. Yep, you heard me right… 50 years old on 1.1.10. So, if I can do it at that age, you can too. Why Jan 1st? I thought I was going to be hooked up to a C-PAP machine the rest of my life because I thought I had sleep apnea. When I was tested in Dec. 2009 for it, that was my initial thought because I weighed 310# and could fall asleep anywhere, anytime. It was scary to fall asleep at a red light, at a stop sign, in a restaurant, in an amusement park (well, not on a roller coaster), but on a bench waiting for my family. After years of that behavior, I thought it was time to get tested. the good news: NO SLEEP APNEA! the bad (hard) news: I NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT!

photo(262)

Now, 3 1/2 years later and 135# lighter, I am hooked on running. I never thought I would be, but that is how I live my life. Hooked on things. Some things I’ve been hooked on in my life: 6 years coaching Little League Baseball before I had my 3 girls. Some of those boys went on to play in college and 1 boy played for the Atlanta Braves. 12 years of being a volunteer fire fighter, (7 of those years as the President of the Volunteer Corporation). 15 years coaching my girls in softball and created & founded the South Lake County Girls Softball Crosstown League in 1998 (with 6 teams from Crown Point, Cedar Lake and St. John), and which still exists today in 2013 with 18 communities and over 75+ teams. http://slcgsct-league.com

Many other things I’m sure I’ve been hooked on, and some I don’t want to remember… I may not be hooked on running, but I can say it is “My Passion”. It’s my passion because it is something that nobody can do for me, I have to do it all myself. It’s not how far you go, it’s just that you go. I’m glad that I decided to lose weight in 2010 and be around awhile for my daughter’s and some day my grandchildren.

I lost all of my weight with NO PILLS, NO POTIONS & NO SURGERIES. That’s all hogwash! There is no miracle pill, no miracle potion or no miracle surgery that can make you lose weight and get fit. It all starts with the mind.

Joy Bauer also put my story in her new book. A book about 30 people from around the country who all lost over 100# with those 3 magic words… NO: PILLS, POTIONS OR SURGERIES! http://www.amazon.com/Joy-Fit-Club-Cookbook-Inspiration/dp/1118181395
