I will never be a fast runner, but I’m always willing to try and get better. That’s feels weird to even say that statement. I did not start running until I was 50 years old. Yep, you heard me right… 50 years old on 1.1.10. So, if I can do it at that age, you can too. Why Jan 1st? I thought I was going to be hooked up to a C-PAP machine the rest of my life because I thought I had sleep apnea. When I was tested in Dec. 2009 for it, that was my initial thought because I weighed 310# and could fall asleep anywhere, anytime. It was scary to fall asleep at a red light, at a stop sign, in a restaurant, in an amusement park (well, not on a roller coaster), but on a bench waiting for my family. After years of that behavior, I thought it was time to get tested. the good news: NO SLEEP APNEA! the bad (hard) news: I NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT!

Now, 3 1/2 years later and 135# lighter, I am hooked on running. I never thought I would be, but that is how I live my life. Hooked on things. Some things I’ve been hooked on in my life: 6 years coaching Little League Baseball before I had my 3 girls. Some of those boys went on to play in college and 1 boy played for the Atlanta Braves. 12 years of being a volunteer fire fighter, (7 of those years as the President of the Volunteer Corporation). 15 years coaching my girls in softball and created & founded the South Lake County Girls Softball Crosstown League in 1998 (with 6 teams from Crown Point, Cedar Lake and St. John), and which still exists today in 2013 with 18 communities and over 75+ teams. http://slcgsct-league.com

Many other things I’m sure I’ve been hooked on, and some I don’t want to remember… I may not be hooked on running, but I can say it is “My Passion”. It’s my passion because it is something that nobody can do for me, I have to do it all myself. It’s not how far you go, it’s just that you go. I’m glad that I decided to lose weight in 2010 and be around awhile for my daughter’s and some day my grandchildren.

I lost all of my weight with NO PILLS, NO POTIONS & NO SURGERIES. That’s all hogwash! There is no miracle pill, no miracle potion or no miracle surgery that can make you lose weight and get fit. It all starts with the mind.

I just refuse to return to the good ‘ole days in some ways. On way that I am passionate about is being FAT.

In December 2009, I got on the scale and weighed 310#. I said to myself I need to lose some weight. It was an alarming wake-up call in December 2009 when I tested negative for sleep apnea when I had convinced myself that I would be on a C-PAP machine the rest of my life. On January 1, 2010 I woke up and said enough is enough. I was just plain ‘ole sick and tired of being sick and tired.

That is the day my life changed and I started walking. I weighed 310# and could barely walk around the block without being out of breath. I walked every day farther and farther every day as I was determined to weigh 200# someday. That was my goal. To date I’ve lost 135#. I had nothing sucked out of me and I did it all on my own.

As I began to walk I also started to take the dog, Molly with me. Molly doesn’t walk… she pulled me down the street. Her pulling took me from walking to running and running and running in a short time. Now over 3 years later, I run 3-miles every day. I have run many 5K’s, a few 10K’s and 4 (YES,4) 1/2 Marathons.

This October 2013, I am running the Chicago Marathon!

The ultimate secret was eating right and exercising. I followed the book “Your Inner Skinny” written bu Joy Bauer from the NBC Today Show. She inducted into her Joy Fit Club on 11.26.10.

First, I want to apologize beforehand if I seem mean or rude, I know that I’m probably going to make some enemies with this one but I need to say it. The dreaded “F” word has become practically a sin or taboo. It seems like nobody wants to even say it.

Today this “F” word is less heard then the real “F” word. The actual bad one. If you go to the movies you’ll hear the real “F” word about 100+ times, but when it comes to MY “F” word: “FAT” nobody likes saying it. There’s no way to get around it, there’s no way to sugar coat it. The only way to take care of it is take it head on and say it. “FAT”. Once you identify the enemy then you are able to find a way to get rid of it.

I’m sorry but the more you try to not hurt someone’s feelings or ego by saying they’re not FAT the less likely they will get rid of it. We’ve all done it or even heard someone do it. Just so a friend won’t get hurt, it won’t even be mentioned. Just go ahead and say it, FAT. Don’t say it mean or rude like YOUR FAT, but say it in a way that will help encourage them.

On December 31, 2009 I decided to lose weight, it was to get healthier and be in better shape. I knew that I had to exercise and watch my food consumption. All overweight people know that’s what they need to do. It’s just hard to make that mental decision.

On January 1, 2010 I woke up and said enough is enough. I was just plain ‘ole sick and tired of being sick and tired. That is the day my life changed and I started walking. I weighed 310# and could barely walk around the block without being out of breath. I walked every day farther and farther as I was determined to weigh 200# someday. That was my goal. And to date, 135# is gone off of my body. Amazing to even myself.

There are easy steps for successful weight loss:
1. Identify the enemy- Yes, this is where it’s OK to say FAT. Once you’ve identified it, now you can get rid of it.

2. Set realistic goals- Set realistic goals that you can reach. Don’t say I want to lose 50 lbs by next week. That’s never gonna happen, all that’s going to happen is you will fail and become discouraged.

3. Get rid of fear and get out of your comfort zone- Fear of failure and not being able to get out of your comfort zone are the 2 main reasons people don’t succeed with weight loss. If you like staying home and watching TV then that’s your comfort zone. Taking a walk outside is not your comfort zone so you will find any excuse not to do it. The last episode of my favorite show is on tonight, or I don’t have the right shoes. Get out of your comfort zone at least once a day for 3 weeks and that will get rid of your old comfort zone.

4. Create a plan or find someone to help you create one- Now it’s time to create a plan to get rid of the FAT. It’s usually not the best idea to follow what all the mainstream media is saying. If you need help, find a professional who can help you create a plan.

It’s OK to say FAT. Be one of the few that aren’t scared to say it and are able to get rid of it!

P.S. Just to be sure the “F” word I’m talking about is “FAT” in case you missed it. I don’t wanna get emails from angry parents that their kids read my blog and thought it was OK to use the other “F” word.

YOU HAVE TO WALK BEFORE YOU CAN RUN… SO WALK EVERY DAY, AND I MEAN EVERY DAY… IT WILL LEAD TO YOU BEING ABLE TO RUN

A recent story I saw on the Brian Williams NBC Nightly News was “82% of women will be obese by 2020, and 79% of men will be obese by 2020.” Let’s all work really hard to make that a statistic we don’t want to come true. And you are all doing that today by being in this contest.

Don’t give up and don’t quit, don’t quit, don’t quit, don’t quit, don’t quit, don’t quit…. DON’T QUIT!

I never thought I would be able to do all of this at the age of 53. If I can do it… ANYBODY CAN DO IT.

Never say “NO” to anything YOU want to accomplish in life. Just go for it!

On 1.12.13 I am running the Disney World 1/2 Marathon. My goal is 2:30:00. That would be 7 minutes faster than my last one in November 2012.

After that, I’m climbing stairs. My 3rd Hustle Up the Hancock in February 2013. 52 floors and over 800+ stairs.

2 1/2 years ago when I started running to lose weight, I never thought I would be training for 3 extreme running events at the same time and trying to eat right. One probably wonders how that can be done or even why would I want to do that?

Well, I wonder that same thing.

I’m running a 30K running race with a team of 3. We each run 10K.
I’m running my 4th 1/2 Marathon in January 2013
I’m climbing stairs. My 3rd Hustle Up the Hancock in February 2013. 52 floors and over 800+ stairs.

I decided in April 2012, after running my 2nd marathon that I was going to run the Disney World 1/2 Marathon on 1.12.13. My wife supported me and said “sign-up” and that’s all I needed to hear. Actually in January 2010 my wife and girls were in Disney World on vacation and I was woke up by loud noise and people talking with megaphones at 5:30 a.m. I walked over to find out what all the noise was all about and was told that 40,000 people where running a 1/2 marathon. I came back and told my wife, “someday I’m gonna do that”. At that time I weighed 310# and she said, OK, good luck with that.

That was the start of my journey. I wanted to lose at least 100#. I never ever thought I would be running 1/2 Marathons. Matter of fact, I never even thought about running. I was just plain ‘ole sick and tired of being sick and tired. I just knew I needed to lose some weight. Too make a long story shorter, I lost 105# in 10 months, I was on the NBC TOday Show in November 2010. Watch my video from my appearance on the NBC Today Show back in November 2010 when I was inducted into the Joy Bauer Fit Club. SeeVideo

And to date, 135# is gone off of my body. Amazing to even myself.

Here is a glance at a week of my training for these 3 events:

Sunday: Run 3-miles, climb 3,600 stairs
Monday: Run 3-miles
Tuesday: Personal Trainer for an hour, climb 3,600 stairs, run 1-3 miles
Wednesday: Run 3-12 miles depending on the 1/2 marathon week
Thursday: Rest. Night, climb 3,600 stairs, run 1-3 miles
Friday: Personal Trainer for an hour
Saturday: Run 5-miles

I never thought I would be able to do all of this at the age of 53. If I can do it… ANYBODY CAN DO IT.

Start today by walking a short distance, which will lead to long distances and eventually running. There I said it… RUNNING. No excuses why you can’t. Your motivation is: Be SKINNIER than you are today.

I beat my last 1/2 Marathon race by 21 minutes. My goal was to beat it by 18 minutes.

I.N.S.P.I.R.A.T.I.O.N.

I have a lady friend who probably weighs less than 100# dripping wet. She said to me about a week ago, I am so out of shape. Now one would think that if someone appears to be in good shape (skinny and looks good) that she claims to be out of shape.

Here is what she recently said to me: “I recently became interested in exercising to get fit and stay fit. I learned very quickly how out of shape I actually I am by the fact that a short jog to the bank from the office wore me out majorly”. I ran for 5 minutes and thought I was going to die. I said, well you didn’t die but you can start to do something to get into shape.

I saw her last Friday and she said, yes, I know that I should not be wearing tennis shoes to work “But, these are my sneakers” and I’m running to the bank today for lunch. Funny how people still call running shoes, “sneakers”.

Here is a woman who has 3 children in her home and is getting married in less than a year. She says she is out of shape. Well, she is now doing a new workout program that they call BURST and it takes LESS THAN 30 MINUTES of pretty simple exercises, but that are done in a way to get awesome results from simple exercises. Here first day, she was so sore and she could barely move. She could not even bend over to pick up the baby! But, she is doing it again tomorrow at 5:30 A.M.

She even takes her kids… Since it is at a park, the kids can play (if they are awake) if you cannot get a sitter (that is what I am doing with my kids). Yes, I am getting me and all three kids out the door, a quick workout, and back home by 6:15am! I am excited about how that will start my day!

I told her, the best time to workout is at 5 or 530am. It’s amazing how good it makes you feel to start your day with a workout. Your energy level will amaze yourself once you start some kind of a program. Way to go Barbara. I’m so glad that I was able to inspire you to get fit. Staying fit will happen as long as you keep it going. Congrats and keep it up. You can do it.

I am on my final day of my own personal 10-day challenge of running at least 3-miles a day for 10 days. By today (7/31/12) I will have run 40 miles in 10 days. If I can do this at the age of 53, anybody can do it.

Today, as I look back on the last 2 yearS, I can’t even believe that I did it. I’ve lost 132 pounds as of this week. This picture taken in March 2010 reminds me that I was overweight and fat at 310#.

In August 2010, my wife bought the book “Your Inner Skinny,” and her and my oldest daughter started the plan. Two weeks later, they suggested that I start the plan as well. That’s when everything really began for me. I weighed 270 pounds then, and by November 1st, I had lost another 65 pounds. My total weight loss was at 105 pounds. I posted my success on Joy Bauer’s Facebook fan page, and soon after, she contacted me about applying to become a member of the Joy Fit Club, an exclusive club of members that have lost over 100 pounds. New Joy Fit Club members are inducted on the NBC Today Show in New York. Soon after filling out the questionnaire, my application was accepted, and I appeared on the NBC Today Show on November 29th.

I am just your average hometown guy that was overweight and knew I needed to do something about it. I decided to go for it (with some help from my family), and now I’m sharing my story with other people who want to lose weight but are afraid to take that first step. Trust me, it’s never too late to become healthy.

Please know that I am always here to help. I want other people to achieve the same type of success that I have. I did it, and I know you can too! This is my picture of Joy Bauer and me after I had lost 105# in New York City on November 29, 2010.
