In December 2009, when I was FAT at 310# and I decided it was time to lose weight, I never ever thought I would be running 1/2 Marathons. Matter of fact, I never even thought about running. I was just plain ‘ole sick and tired of being sick and tired. I just knew I needed to lose some weight.

January 1, 2010 was the first day of my journey. Too make a long story shorter, I lost 105# in 10 months, I was on the NBC TOday Show in November 2010. Watch my video from my appearance on the NBC Today Show back in November 2010 when I was inducted into the Joy Bauer Fit Club. SeeVideo

And to date, 135# is gone off of my body. Amazing to even myself.

On 11/11/12 I ran and finished my 3rd 1/2 Marathon. Who would of thought.
I beat my last 1/2 Marathon race by 21 minutes. My goal was to beat it by 18 minutes.

My point is, If “I can do it, anybody can do it”.

Never say “NO” to anything YOU want to accomplish in life. Just go for it!

Contact me if you need a friend to help you through your journey.

Start today by walking a short distance, which will lead to long distances and eventually running. There I said it… RUNNING. No excuses why you can’t. Your motivation is: SKINNIER than you are today.

I am still setting goals for myself at the age of 53. I already have registered for the Disney World 1/2 Marathon which will be in January 2013. That’s the ultimate “dream” for me, that’s gonna come true for me then.

My goal for the DisneyWorld 1/2 is 2:30:00.

I have a lady friend who probably weighs less than 100# dripping wet. She said to me about a week ago, I am so out of shape. Now one would think that if someone appears to be in good shape (skinny and looks good) that she claims to be out of shape.

Here is what she recently said to me: “I recently became interested in exercising to get fit and stay fit. I learned very quickly how out of shape I actually I am by the fact that a short jog to the bank from the office wore me out majorly”. I ran for 5 minutes and thought I was going to die. I said, well you didn’t die but you can start to do something to get into shape.

I saw her last Friday and she said, yes, I know that I should not be wearing tennis shoes to work “But, these are my sneakers” and I’m running to the bank today for lunch. Funny how people still call running shoes, “sneakers”.

Here is a woman who has 3 children in her home and is getting married in less than a year. She says she is out of shape. Well, she is now doing a new workout program that they call BURST and it takes LESS THAN 30 MINUTES of pretty simple exercises, but that are done in a way to get awesome results from simple exercises. Here first day, she was so sore and she could barely move. She could not even bend over to pick up the baby! But, she is doing it again tomorrow at 5:30 A.M.

She even takes her kids… Since it is at a park, the kids can play (if they are awake) if you cannot get a sitter (that is what I am doing with my kids). Yes, I am getting me and all three kids out the door, a quick workout, and back home by 6:15am! I am excited about how that will start my day!

I told her, the best time to workout is at 5 or 530am. It’s amazing how good it makes you feel to start your day with a workout. Your energy level will amaze yourself once you start some kind of a program. Way to go Barbara. I’m so glad that I was able to inspire you to get fit. Staying fit will happen as long as you keep it going. Congrats and keep it up. You can do it.

I am on my final day of my own personal 10-day challenge of running at least 3-miles a day for 10 days. By today (7/31/12) I will have run 40 miles in 10 days. If I can do this at the age of 53, anybody can do it.

Today, as I look back on the last 2 yearS, I can’t even believe that I did it. I’ve lost 132 pounds as of this week. This picture taken in March 2010 reminds me that I was overweight and fat at 310#.

In August 2010, my wife bought the book “Your Inner Skinny,” and her and my oldest daughter started the plan. Two weeks later, they suggested that I start the plan as well. That’s when everything really began for me. I weighed 270 pounds then, and by November 1st, I had lost another 65 pounds. My total weight loss was at 105 pounds. I posted my success on Joy Bauer’s Facebook fan page, and soon after, she contacted me about applying to become a member of the Joy Fit Club, an exclusive club of members that have lost over 100 pounds. New Joy Fit Club members are inducted on the NBC Today Show in New York. Soon after filling out the questionnaire, my application was accepted, and I appeared on the NBC Today Show on November 29th.

I am just your average hometown guy that was overweight and knew I needed to do something about it. I decided to go for it (with some help from my family), and now I’m sharing my story with other people who want to lose weight but are afraid to take that first step. Trust me, it’s never too late to become healthy.

Please know that I am always here to help. I want other people to achieve the same type of success that I have. I did it, and I know you can too! This is my picture of Joy Bauer and me after I had lost 105# in New York City on November 29, 2010.

Last Saturday, my wife says “I want to try the “Your Inner Skinny” program again. My response was fantastic. “Your Inner Skinny” is a book written by Joy Bauer from the NBC Today Show. She is the NBC Today Show Head Nutrionalist and it was the plan I followed on my way to lose 130# in 2010. She said let’s go on that diet. I said it’s not a D.I.E.t, because the first 3 letters spells something I am not ready for yet. D.I.E.t., it’s a huge food lifestyle change.

We made the food list and set off to the grocery store. I thought in order to help her, I’ll do it again and start back on week 1. It’s amazing how well she did. No pop (she used to drink 2-3 20 oz.. ones a day) and no mini-chocolate bars (which she ate 4-6 daily).

Our official weigh-in after week 1 was this morning, we both lost 5# each. A good start for week 1. Week 2 begins today with home-made muffins of 100 calories each and bananas for breakfast. A few more healthy foods added this week.

My wife are now doing this program together. I suggest that you start today and have a person to do it with. Going it alone is always hard, so buddy up and find a family member or a friend to go on the journey with you.

I have another goal in mind of 175#, which will be my final goal as I want to continue with my upper body building.

Today, as I look back on the last 2 years, I can’t even believe that I did it. I’ve lost 135 pounds as of this week. This picture taken in March 2010 reminds me that I was overweight and fat at 310#.

Every day I see someone I haven’t seen in quite sometime and I have to tell them who I am because they don’t recognize me. When I was fat over 300#, everybody seems to remember me with that look. One look I never want to see again. My picture was always taken when I was fat and have those pictures to prove it. My 310# picture I took when I decided to lose weight shows me in the prime of my heaviest. As I lost weight, I took a picture every 20# lost. Now that I have lost 130# my skinny pictures are nice to look at. I have worked really hard to lose the weight and to maintain the loss.

Today, was a funny day. I saw a guy at the post office and when I said hi “Tom”, he looked at me and said “How do you know my name?” When I told him who I was and that we used to work together, he made me show him my drivers license to prove who I was. I was blown away by that, but really happy that if that’s how I have to do it, then so be it.

If I can lose 130# at the age of 50, you can do it too. Just take that fat picture and pictures during your transformation.

This is this year to change your life and take charge of your health.

How to start to losing weight:
1. Mentally change your mind that you want to lose weight and get in shape.
2. Start walking today. One time around the block, turns into more and more.
3. Start eating less when it comes to consumption.
4. Join a group that motivates you to change your eating plan.
5. Ask someone else to be a mentor for each other.
6. Join a walking group or running group.
7. Plan your exercise.
8. If you change your mind and do the above, it’s amazing the results you will begin to see.

My motto: If YOU are not moving, YOU are not losing… If YOU say YOU can’t, YOU won’t… I know believe ME!

My point is if YOU say YOU can’t, YOU won’t, and that has to do with everything in life. Do some kind of exercise everyday and keep moving. If YOU are moving, YOU are losing something. At the end of the day, YOU will feel better that YOU accomplished something today, that YOU didn’t do yesterday. The thing about it is, YOU have to do it everyday.

Never say “NO” to anything YOU want to accomplish in life. Just go for it!

On April 15, 2012 I ran my 2nd 1/2 marathon in my life. I trained really, really hard for this one. Running between 18-24 miles a week. Now you think, that’s already a 1/2 marathon plus some, but in the end I beat my last 1/2 marathon by 2 minutes. Let’s think about that for a minute. 2 minutes faster over 13.1 miles probably seems like nothing, but to a runner, a PR (Personal Record) is huge.

The day started out the day at 6:30 a.m. standing under a pavilion in the rain, thunder and lightning. I kept asking myself, I could be in my warm bed right now like my wife, daughter and future son-in-law that were home visiting for the weekend. After 1/2 hour of that weather, the lightning cleared and it was race time. Standing next to “Sammi”, before the race and she said “we are at the front of the line” and I said great, we get to be passed by everyone, which will make me feel really good. It started to get warmer and I had a short sleeve shirt under a long sleeve shirt. I looked up and my daughter was waving at me. It was good feeling that even though I thought they were sleeping, they came to see me run. My wife, daughter and future son-in-law were there. As the color guard held the flags and the young lady sang the national anthem (yes, a 1st for that), I reflected upon the fact that 2 years ago when I weighed 310#, that I could not do what I was about to venture off down the road and do again. 2 years of hard work to lose 130# and keep it off.

The entire race was grueling and emotional because once you start, there is no quitting. There is no one to call to come get me (even though I wanted to make that call many times) I kept pushing and pushing through the pain and the fact that everyone was passing me. I kept thinking that my 1st 1/2 marathon, I cramped up at mile 11 and I had to walk the last 2 miles and was grounded to the recliner for the rest of the day with ice packs strapped to the back so my legs. I was really looking forward to that again in about 3 hours.

To my amazement, things were going well. No real constant pain, just kept seeing the mile markers, 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on. It rained off and on most of the day and windy, Well, really windy (30-40 mph) most of the day. To make a long story short, I finished my 2nd 1/2 marathon on 2 minutes less that my 1st and my next one will be even better than this one.

If I could just run all of the miles as fast as the last mile, then I would be doing so much better. I ended up passing 9 people in the last mile which made me feel really good and as I was finishing my daughter was taking pictures of me and trying to stay ahead of me to get that ultimate picture. My wife and Matt, where cheering me on along with many other people including Nikki who I could clearly hear “Come on Rick” along with the 1/2 marathon training group from Lake and Porter County. Nice to not be close to last. My wife jokingly said “There are people finishing after you”. The biggest accomplishment was being able to be “ice-free” this time around after the race. I was so pumped up and excited that 2 hours later, I registered for the Disney World 1/2 Marathon which will be in January 2013. That’s the ultimate “dream” for me, that’s gonna come true for me then.

YOU have to believe that YOU too can run a 1/2 marathon. YOU must walk before YOU can run.

If “I can do it, anybody can do it”.

Never say “NO” to anything YOU want to accomplish in life. Just go for it!

As I continue my training to run a 1/2 marathon on November 13, 2011, it’s funny that when I run, I think about the topic of my next blog. Today I was thinking I’m not on a D.I.E.t, because the first 3 letters spells something I am not ready for yet. D.I.E.t., it’s a huge food lifestyle change.

Lately, I’ve been a running fool, 6-miles in 56 minutes tonight, 5K last Saturday, 5-miles last Friday night. 36 holes of golf in 2 days and cross-training/spinning class on Tuesday @ 5:15 a.m. Maybe time for some rest… Nah!!! 1/2 Marathon in November 🙂

I also got my vision back to 20/20 in my right eye, 63 days after my detached retina surgery. My doctor said “you are one lucky guy” and I said “no, you are one good doctor”.

Today, as I look back on the last year, I can’t even believe that I did it. I’ve lost 130 pounds as of this week. This picture taken in March 2010 reminds me that I was overweight and fat at 310#.

September 1, 2011 was another great day in my life. I got my braces off after having them on for 19 months. Even after losing another 5# to get to my total weight loss of 130#, I had a few food items on my list that day. Peanut butter and jelly was my first sticky item, followed by 1/4# of triple chocolate malt balls from Albanese Candy. 2 items that I missed dearly while my teeth were being straightened. Now that I have satisfied those cravings, I am back to my food lifestyle change.

I also got my vision back to 20/20 in my right eye, 63 days after my detached retina surgery. My doctor said “you are one lucky guy” and I said “no, you are one good doctor”. Now I am backing to running and have run 2 races since August 28th (5K) and a 4 mile race last Sunday. This Sunday is 911 and I am running in the 911 Heroes Run. A race around the world with over 40 locations being run at the same time. 30 in the USA and 10 more around the world including Afghanistan, Iraq, Italy, Persian Gulf, Qatar, United Kingdom.

I also started my training to run a 1/2 Marathon on November 13th. Today, as I look back on the last year, I can’t even believe that I did it. I’ve lost 130 pounds as of this week. This picture taken in March 2010 reminds me that I was overweight and fat at 310#.

Yesterday someone said to me “I don’t remember you ever being overweight.” I said, yes at 310#, I was fat. So here is my story. When I decided in December 2009 to lose weight, it was to get healthier and be in better shape. It was very hard to be 50 years old and weigh 310 pounds. I knew that I had to exercise and watch my food consumption. All overweight people know that’s what they need to do. It’s just hard to mentally start doing something about it. I started walking daily and began the journey of watching what I ate. Today, as I look back on the last year, I can’t even believe that I did it. I’ve lost 125 pounds as of this week. This picture taken in March 2010 reminds me that I was overweight.

In August 2010, my wife bought the book “Your Inner Skinny,” and her and my oldest daughter started the plan. Two weeks later, they suggested that I start the plan as well. A good friend and client of mine read the book in Nov 2010 and began his plan to do something about being overweight. He has 145# since that time. Three more of my clients started their own plans and together they have lost over 200 pounds in a few short months. I know 11 people that have decided to lose weight and together we have lost over 1,100#. Please know that I am always here to help. I want other people to achieve the same type of success that I have. I did it, and I know you can too!

Rick

I recently was asked by someone that has not seen me in over a year and she asked me “Why did you lose so much weight?” My first initial thought was seriously, why would someone ask me that? But, I said because I wanted to. To date I’ve lost 125#. I had nothing sucked out of me and I did it all on my own. We had a nice conversation and I told her the story of “My Journey”. I told her watch my video and you can see where I was and where I am today. Watch my video from my appearance on the NBC Today Show back in November 2010 when I was inducted into the Joy Bauer Fit Club because I had lost over 100# back then SeeVideo

After we ended our conversation, I thought back to her question and said many people lose weight because they are sick and not healthy. Obese people are sick (and I say obese because at 310#) I considered myself obese. Not all obese people are sick, but the excessive weight can not be healthy. I am in the best shape of my life at 52 years old (just had my 52nd on July 11th). I don’t smoke, drink alcohol daily, and I take “NO” medications. No pills or drinks to keep my weight maintained. I am completely off high cholesterol medications. When I was fat,I was taking 80mg a day. Now, nothing.

I have been able to maintain my 125# weight loss and actually met my ultimate goal of 185# after my retina surgery. I never thought on 12-21-09 that I would ever get to 185#. My first goal was to lose 20#. I have well surpassed that goal. The key now is that with retina detachment surgery I can’t exercise or run or jog or walk anywhere. So, I really have to watch what I eat. It would be so easy to lay on my stomach and eat whatever I want to. My will power is looking at the picture of myself when I weighed 310# and that there is enough to keep me focused on maintaining. My lifestyle change with food has not changed and YES I said “lifestyle change”. I do not call it a diet because the first 3 letters in diet is D-I-E and I’m not ready for that. I might not be able to see out of my right eye now, but I am clearly not ready to die, it’s just another roadblock in life. I’ll get through this and maintain my weight around 185# through eating yogurt, bananas, low cal muffins, chicken, steak and lots and lots and lots of water.

One day when I can see again, I can come see you and give my presentation about how to “Promote Change in Your Lifestyle and Your Business”. If I can do it, YOU can too!

This is this year to change your life and take charge of your health. NBC news recently reported that nearly 70% of adults in this country are overweight. One in three is obese. About half that many kids and teens are considered obese.

Let’s all try to reduce that percentage.

How to start:
