Did you say RUN? Who would of thought… I can do it, you can too!

In 2009, I never thought I would be a runner, because I was fat at 310#. But 2 1/2 years later I am and I’ve lost 135#. Last Saturday 9-8-12 I was part of a running team that ran the 5 mile Popcorn Panic in Valparaiso, IN. It was first time running the event and I like first time races because I don’t know the course and have no idea what to expect. I arrived at 6:15 a.m. for our team picture at 6:30 a.m. and nobody else was there. It was 60 some degrees outside and Doug who I just met proceeds to tell me about the course. Don’t go out fast he says, (guess he didn’t know my fast and slow is the same pace) well at least I was thinking that. He says the 1st mile is straight uphill and it’s hilly and scenic.

As my race preparation began I was thinking that I wanted to run an 11 minute mile for 5 miles, that would be good for me.

The race began and just like every other race I started out fast to keep up with the crowd. I was kinda liking the fast pace (well at least for me). My 2st mile was a 9:27 and I said wow, I’ve never done that. So, if I can do this pace for 1 mile and I want to do this for the next mile. As each mile came and the Map My Run program on my phone is telling me pace, 9:29, 9:45, 10:12, I thought I can do this 5 miler in less than a 10:30 pace.

I pushed through that last mile despite the fact that 2 people were losing their breakfast on the course, one that stopped and one that just kept on running.

I finished the 5 miler at a 10:19 pace. My best time ever (PR) for me.

I was excited and even more excited when I saw all of team members at the end, knowing that they did even better than me and this was my PR.

If I can start running at the age of 50, anybody can do this.

Get out there and walk as walking leads to running.

YOU have to believe that YOU too can run. YOU must walk before YOU can run.

If “I can do it, anybody can do it”.

Never say “NO” to anything YOU want to accomplish in life. Just go for it!
